24 bits would in fact be a 144 db range. Some DVD-As, Dolby Digital, and DTS recordings will deliver 20 bits of resolution but the whole mixing chain needs to be up to the task.
The Single to Noise of LP playback will be in the 60 to 70 db range although the music will continue to exist in the noise floor. Digital sources could exceed this performance although anything over a real 20 bits will be tough to deliver.
