In my opinion tone controls can be used for, A-room correction or B- on a software case by case basis. These are two different things. In a large system with extended deep bass some EQ will be needed in a typical living room. I use a 3 band parametric on my sub which I cross over at 80 hz, 24 dB per octave. If I did not cut the peaks in the response, due to the geometry of the room, it would be either boom city or no bass. I am using a double 12" sub drivin by a Mc MI200 watt amp.
After Eq the response is very smooth and the -3 Db. point is around 25 HZ. Without Eq the peaks at 40 and 60 some Hz will swamp the very deep bass. Whats not to like if EQ is a solution?
On some recordings I might use bass or treble controls but it is rare. If I adjusted a multi band EQ for every recording I would go nuts. If the room is treated the vast majority of recordings should be fine. Older movies are in need of help as they were mixed to the old curve which assumed screen roll off and projection through same.
Some of the old rock CDs have me diving for the treble control but most of the CD transfers have improved.
