Silent Plugs : Further Impressions

I am posting this as a new thread. I am unable to post a follow up to my original thread

Keep in mind I am using a <$300 Oppo HD 970 DVD/CD/DVD-A/SACD player.

A fellow 'file came over to hear what adding 2 more sets of Silent Plugs would do. Both of us picked up on the changes within 5 seconds per test, a bit longer when the intros were slow – Dire Straits, Sara K (DVD-A), Patricia Barber (FIM)

In order of removal

1.I took the ONE SP off the subwoofer rca input. I put it back in after less than 10 seconds. That dramatic. The value of placing one there should be shouted from the roof tops.

2. The 2 rca inputs (not connected, but powered up) on the W4S MC 250/500 4 channel amp. Now this makes no logical sense, but something told me to try it. Immediately reinserted SPs- Ahhhhhhhhhhhh

3. Preamp Direct I/Os (4 SPs). Same immediate result.

In all the above, when SPs are taken out; the sound stage, texture and dynamics goes from something akin to 30” IPS quality to collapsing, and a high freq edge returns- only now it’s unbearable

Moving on – How many SPs is too many?

So, all of the above are in place...

1. I added 2 more SPs to some weird outputs on the preamp (maybe THX bypass or something). It was like someone put a blanket over the music

2. Since the Oppo is surround there are 3 potential inputs 2 channel, mixed, and surround. Adding a second pair was similarly subtractive. *I did/do have 4 cheap plastic caps, and while the SPs were too much here, I did need to reinsert the plastic caps.

Testing done? Not exactly

Since the Oppo is a DVD layer it has the obligatory r/y/b rca video inputs. I had one SP left. What the hell. Now this is rather shocking in that the notes filled in - more complete, more texture (sort of like adding a high quality DAC). I haven’t yet tried whether the SP is best on the r/b or y. I’m almost afraid to.
