I have been using my Panasonic DVD-RP62 as a CD source in the Living Room and an old Sony 620ES in the Office. Of the two, the RP62 sounds better.
I am always looking for low cost options to improve playback. A Cambridge CD6 sounded about the same as the RP62. A Rotel 971 sounded a bit better but I didn't find the difference worth the cost.Over the weekend I borrowed some old Audio Alchemy gear:
· Digital Decoding Engine V1.0 (DDE)
· Digital Transmission Interface (DTI)
· Power Station 2This time I heard a big difference. Clearer and more extended treble, better controlled, clearer and louder bass and none of the extra harshness that sometimes accompanies more apparent detail.
When I used the RP62 as a transport, there was however an alarming series of pops from the speakers when the CD was stopped. This problem was not apparent using a Sony MDP 455 laserdisc as a transport. Both were connected with Toslink.
If I bypassed the DTI, the problem also went away but the sound was less impressive.
Has anyone run into this? I’m not sure if it’s the DTI, the RP62, a compatibility issue, a set up issue or something else.

David Warden
