The Linear Technologies (Texas) LM1086 5V fixed version has much lower noise and tighter tolerances than a regular 7805.
In my system, it does increase smoothness and soundstaging, a sure sign of a quieter power supply.
If you solder a better cap (Panasonic, Oscon, Black gate) after the regulator, that's the icing on the cake.
I use the LM1086-5V version in all my CDP mods, it's probably one of the most cost effective tweaks. Read my post on Rega Planet tweaks for the part number.
Beware that the pinout is different, you must turn the IC around and bend/cross/insulate a couple of legs to make the LM1086 work in the stock circuit board.
Good luck
Carlos
