Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: 24 bit resolution or not....

Yes, dCS DACs approach true 23-24 bit resolution, even when physics
dictate a hard limit at 21 bits or so (at room temperature, better
if you're prepared to go cryogenic - hint - there's the next
high-end wave!). They do so by time-averaging the oversampled
output of a cluster of random-ly fired low-bit DAC elements, so that
their combined output has better linearity than any single element
by its own. Of course, further down the output chain noise
again creeps in at the 21 bit level.

Whether one needs a cool 24 bits or not is immaterial. If THIS DAC
sounds better than THAT DAC, then THIS DAC is better, regardless
the paper work and tables with figures. One should learn
to let go of the mechanical pseudo-scientific approach in audio:
it really doesn't matter, at least not at the level of the
consumer.
