Check out the geometric stabilzation of Precision Gage Blocks (called Jo-Blocks or Do All Blocks).
Cycling the material (steel) repeatedly between room temp and cryogenic levels ( <-200 degrees F), relieves manufacturing stresses far more effectively than tempering with heat.
Its been standard practice in Precision tooling, gaging, and comparitive measurement since, oh about the 1880's......
