RE: The 4 ways to decode digital

The better classical labels do not gain ride. They simply present the recording the way the musicians performed. These include Channel Classics and Bis. (And undoubtedly, they lose some sales because of this practice from idiots who think that Classical Music intended for orchestral concerts is suitable for background music.)

Back in the 1960's the better FM radio systems broadcast orchestral concerts without any gain riding or limiting. I know this for a fact, having my hands on the knobs for several broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from WHRB-FM. (This was before stereo FM came into use, so that FM still worked properly the way Armstrong invented it.) Today, I am told this is no longer true, because with the use of stereo, and multiplexing of other channels there is no longer sufficient RF bandwidth for the S/N ratio to improve. The bean counters go for "louder" because it increases the size of their "footprint" and hence the number of customers they can claim to their advertisers.
