RE: Are there any media servers that allow for file backup?

Media servers are computers. If you use them, you are (not will be) involved with computer audio. The bed covers may have a different logo and color, but it's the same under the sheets. You can back up computers (or disks in computers) to other disks (on the same or other computers). Now, in addition to being involved with computers and computer audio you are involved with computer networking.

If you store your music on disks, you must back it up otherwise you will lose it and it probably be sooner than later. The good news is that it is much easier to backup files on one or two large disk drives instead of hundreds or thousands of CDs. (And you may well lose the data on your CD's as well if they are CD-R's and not stamped CDs.)

Normal computer backup programs are not suitable for backing up a media library. They typically do complete backups, which means that they recopy everything. This requires multiples of storage space and lots of time. A better way of doing this is to make a backup of new media files when they are added to your library, but then don't recopy the same files over and over. There is software that will look at file directories and note which files have changed. I use SyncBackPro and have it set up so that new files in my library are backed up automatically each night, but if a file in my library has been changed since it was backed up I get a warning message. That way, if a file in my library gets corrupted or hacked the backup won't be damaged. Scanning my library and discovering that there were no changes and the backup is in sync takes a few minutes for 5 TB of files.
