Our group didn't build a red box. We weren't trying to cheat the phone company, just figure out how the long distance network really worked. (This served us in good stead, as years later when we read our FOIA files we learned that ATT had asked the Deputy DA (Fed) for Boston for a criminal prosecution of our group, but he declined because we hadn't broken any laws. Later, all kinds of Fascist laws were passed, some even before 9-11.)
We did build a "black box" for the callee. This enabled calls to be received, but the caller would not get billed because the accounting system thought the calls were not completed.
