Both answers are correct. There are "sweet-spots" for all digital cables, even I2S and Firewire.1) very short, like under 8" so that no transmission-line effects occur during the signal transitions
2) medium length, like 1-1.5 meters so that the reflections occur AFTER the edge transitionsAll other lengths can be problematic. The optimum length depends on the risetimes.

As for high-quality USB cables, they are beneficial in certain cases. With a properly implemented async interface, they have little or no effect.
