Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: That clears up a lot!

"Agreed. There will be no agreement. Our world views, if not tastes in music, are simply too divergent."

Maybe so, but just so you know...

There was an amplifier comparison published about 15 years ago in Audio, by a couple of guys from the Michigan group, SMWTMS. I think one of them was Arny Kreuger, but anyway, the two amps were both solid-state, one with a silver-colored metal case and the other with a gold face-plate and a wooden case. One of the reviewers said the gold/wood one sounded slightly warmer and more musical to him. They did an ABX comparison and he couldn't tell it from the other one by the sound alone, but at the end of the review he wrote, "Even though I knew it was a psychological effect, the wooden one still sounded better to me."

I thought this was a cool thing to say, and there's no question in my mind that faced with a purchasing decision he should buy the one he liked. The end product of audio is supposed to be enjoyment.

About my office system, clients still ask, "How do you get any work done? I'd just sit and listen to music on this if I had it."

Finally, about testing: The ABX box sometimes encourages, but does not require, certain kinds of rapid switching. When differences are clear to me, I just listen to X and switch from trial to trial, marking down answers. If you tried the high-bit test you could do the same (and we could use the office system, which at the moment has an Adcom) or substitute another amp for the Carver in the house system if for any reason you just didn't want to use it.
