Tony: I would like to know the basis for your statement that "the experimental test setup was not properly calibrated." 'Tain't so. All the accepted protocols for level matching, switching delay, etc. were followed to the letter. Also incorrect (and really, you ought to know me well enough after all these years not to say this) is your assertion that "the Boston Audio Society" wanted to show any particular result. The BAS did not do these experiments or write this paper; David Moran and I did, and we were not looking for any specific outcome. I would have been more than happy to find people and circumstances in which the difference was audible. Having reported both positive results of ABX tests (as in my power amplifier differences piece for Sound and Vision) and negative ones, I can tell you the positive ones are much more fun and vastly less trouble.
While the number of trials we conducted may not have been great enough to conclusively reject the null hypothesis (which would have severely tried the patience of every subject), we did a lot of trials on a lot of different, but all excellent, systems, using many trained listeners, without finding a single combination of source material, system and room that produced a single solid positive result. We have proven quite conclusively that the extra bits are, at the very least, not obvious, as is so often claimed in audiophile circles. That I think is worthwhile. If it IS easy, go and prove it instead of distorting our intentions and attacking our competence. That would really be far more convincing. -- E. Brad Meyer
