Marantz SA-11S1: Upsampling? Oversampling? Does it matter?

Hi, All,

I have been reading with interest the recent threads about the desirability of upsampling for RedBook playback in a digital player.

It seems that over the past few years upsampling of CD data had been all the rage, but recently the trend seems to have cooled. Apparently the illusion of increased resolution initially perceived was felt by some to be overbalanced by RFI effects and various other artifacts.

My question is really one of semantics (as I love my SA-11S1, and have no complaints about the sound at all), but I would like to know where the unit "fits" in the scheme of things:

Is the Marantz SA-11S1 (and also the other related Marantz players) considered to be an "upsampling" design?

From the info in the unit's technical specifications for "CD Audio" playback the DAC is specified as "192kHz/24bit", but the sampling frequency is given as "44.1kHz".

I seem to remember that I read in an online review that the SA-11S1 is "technically not an upsampling design", however, in the description of the unit's switchable digital filters, filter three is described as an "8-times oversampling" design.

I think I understand the difference between upsampling and oversampling (the former takes place in within the DAC or in a separate upsampling stage, and the latter in the digital filter stage?), but is there a difference between the two as far as the audible effects on RedBook playback?

In other words, in view of the recent discussions about the desirability of upsampling, should the SA-11 be considered an "upsampling" or a "non-upsampling" design?

Thanks!

Ken
