Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Certainly worth fixing

Your unit is a first generation Prima made in 1999.
It uses Burr Brown Dacs and op-amps plus a pair of 6021 military long-life tubes for gain in the analog stage. Its transport is made by Phillips and I believe spare parts are readily available.
Your description of the problem looks like a weak laser (optical unit), which is to be expected after 8 years of usage.

Your player is worth fixing, I bet it will sound better than the Sony in the midrange, treble and soundstaging, though your Sony's bass is hard to beat.
Good luck
