Revox B226...warm, rich, analog sound or harsh, screaming, digital piece of junk???

I've been having a really hard time finding a cd player that I like. I've been using a modified Music Hall CD25 and although it's fairly transparent, I feel the treble tends to be harsh. Then I picked up a used California Audio Labs Icon II HDCD player because everyone says it's very musical and warm. It's true...it has a very full sound with great bass, but also can be edgy and I don't think the music flows as nicely as with the music hall....maybe it's showing it's age?

That brings me to the Revox B226. A friend of mine has one for sale and I've read people commenting on how smooth it sounds.....how analog the presentation is. Now my gut reaction is to REFUSE to believe that a 14 bit vintage player could sound anything other than mechanical and harsh...though the descriptions of the sound make it seem like something worth considering. So what is the real deal with the Revox? Smash or trash?? Help!!!
