There is a simple reason: the actual high-end markup from raw parts cost to retail price is 5 times, because volumes are very low. Keep in mind that many high-end companies go broke, even with such high margins.
A selected (best linearity) Burr Brown PCM 1702 costs $18. Most of the high-end CDps use one DAC per channel in balanced/differential mode.
Let's suppose you want to install 4 additional DACs in paralell:
4 DACs*2*$18*5 = $600 plus additional labor costs and sales tax...
Conclusion: this is a solution adopted on high-priced players only.
