Rhodium is much harder than gold, it is used mainly for its durability.
Also, an intermediary nickel layer is usually used to make the gold plating stick to the base metal.
Nickel is said to increase distortion at the micro-level.Rhodium works OK with an intermediary silver layer, that's why rhodium plated plugs sound "silvery".
On my subjective tests, I prefer direct gold plating over the above methods.
