This doesn't really go to your (excellent) point, but:It's not just that it's mechanical vs. electrical. It's that guitar strings are steel and cables are not. The mechanism for cryo treatment in steel is very specific and has to do with the way carbon and iron stack together in steel. The two usual cable materials are both substantially a single element.
