Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Tweaks, Geeks, and market forces....

For commercial products, I've no quibble with IEC power connections. Folks in North America should realize that many products are sold in Europe, Asia. Anzac.... where the wall plugs and voltages are different. The IEC and dual primaries in transformers allow a single product to be sold throughout the world. Nuff said.

Now for the tweakers and diyers among us, I'll mount my soapbox. For example, take Kevin P's excellent implementation of Jon Risch's power conditioner. Kevin's site now announces that they no longer provide a bundled powercord, due to market demands, hence, by necessity, an IEC connector. Now to ameliorate the deleterious effects of those evil connections, we can use Futertec, FIM, Acme, Marinco... IEC males and females, silverplated and cryogenic treated, assembled upon the quivering thighs of the few remaining virgins of Teira del Fuego. We can purchase the Asylum or the 'Straight Jacket' cords to connect from the wall to the conditioner. And let us not forget the cords we will purchase to connect to those extra cost Acme outlets. By definition, all connectors suck, whether additive, subtractive, whatever... and eliminating as many as practically possible is a good thing. The tweak has the option of hardwiring the input of the conditioner, as well as the output(s). Certainly we need removable connectors somewhere, lest we have an octopus connecting our pre, dac, transport..., permanently connecting our components together all the way to the outlet. Certainly, put and Acme 5266 plug to connect to the outlet, and a 'blessed' Schurter to connect to the components, or whatever floats your boat. But to argue that the intervention of additional connections, other than providing flexibility, is a good thing, defies logic. It is for folks who think that Occam's Rayzor is made by Gillette, and obviously have more money than common sense.

This is not a criticism of Diycable's excellent products. They are simply responding the befuddled demands of the marketplace. The 'tweak' has the option of building their own version of the JR conditioner (or the PS Audio UO with that breakthrough 'balun') in any form they choose. If we choose to blow smoke up our own ass, so be it.
