Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

RE: Only if you don't understand physics :-)

Hey Picture,

Can I use some 1/4" or 1/8" yacht braid in nylon or polyester? Would that be acceptable? I have that in stock.

You could, though I would recommend the cotton. It has a better dielectric constant, and I have done the test so I am confident that there will be a difference, and if I am to intrude on your to do list, then well I want you to have something good to come out of it. Cotton is the way to go. Get the cotton string at a grocery store. They use it to tie up chicken or turkey and that is purer than the stuff at the hardware store.

As long as I use the same RCA on each cable, I can use cheap-o, right?

Yep for this test it will be fine and cheap is not ALWAYS a sign of bad. Just be consistent.

And note the way the wire comes off the spool. Mark all the wires so you can rule out wire directionality. Dont over think it, just be consistent, and connect the cables in the same direction as the other set.

#24 for i/c is also fine, right? Does it make any diff what magnet wire? RatShack sells it in various colors of insulation. Or is the color coded to wire size?

The magwire at ratshack is sold in spools of 3. They are color coded for the gauge...green is 24g, red like the pict is 30g, and gold is 22g I think. You can use the red or the green. Green is a bit easier to work with, though I prefer the red for Ics. This will cost you about $6.

What would you get, if you LIKED this I/C than fed it thru some heatshrink? Any good? more change?

The last one I made, I did just that though I used tech flex and not heat shrink. I sent them off to an inmate and he still has them...I only use balanced these days, but WILL be making some balanced ones and will put some techflex. I would imagine that it does hurt the sound a bit, but all this stuff is an exercise in compromise and there are practical concerns. YOu can probably listen without the tech flex and then add it and see for your self.

Would I note a change (part of test, no?) if I substituted ONE of these against one of my stock cables?

Depends on which one. But yes I think you would.

Don't tell me what to listen 'for'. If I note an effect, than I guess the next test would be to swap back in one of my other cables.....or even one from that bundle of JUNK stuff I've collected over the years...you know, the stuff that comes with everything....and than they sit in a drawer and breed like crazy.

Possibilities are limitless. And YES that is a good approach. Not 'Better'.....just prove a difference!

Yes, that is a worth while endeavor IMHO. If you can establish differences exist, and in this case you can control the variables, you can see what really matters in cable construction. The thing is that there are TONS of variables even on a simple interconnect. One next step would be to make the same ic but use the different color wires in the rat shack pack. That way you could see what impact gauge has on the sound. Then you could try silver or like it did, steel conductors.

And about "best". I dont think there is a best exactly. Every system is different.
