From what you say, the soldering must have upset the cryogenic treatment. The termination wire looks exactly the same - I assume it has not been DCTd (perhaps the stiffness lies in the insulation after cryoing).
I think it's time to admit defeat and return the cable to Townshend for repairs. Lesson learned!!!
