Art Dudley is a very smart fellow with a keen set of ears. I have trusted his judgement since the golden era of Listener magazine (a witty, intelligent audio publication).I make cables and know for a fact (everyone in the industry knows it) that nickel plating sounds metallic, congested and peaky.
Nickel is used mostly because it is an inexpensive way to plate copper. It also makes a binding layer for gold on top. That's why some so-called gold outlets fail to impress.
I have a collection of dud outlets in my closet to prove it.Have you seen any nickel-plated RCA connectors or speaker connectors lately ?
It amazes me that PS Audio, being a kind of AC-specialized outfit, still uses nickel. If they took the time to plate ONE cable in their reference system with direct gold plating, rhodium or silver, they would not believe the difference.
All the above in my view and according to my experince and my taste, of course.
Enjoy the music
