Re: Cryogenic treatment of Foreplay

Several weeks ago Stylin LP asked about cryo treating the Foreplay and Seduction. Coincidentally it was while I was getting my Foreplay etc cryo'd.

Shortly after I reported having some issues. I have resolved all of the issues which were actually quite minor. The only true failure I experienced was with two UF4007's. The two in my pre amp had turned into 630 and 820 ohm resistors. Smoothplate figured that this was likely due to the treatment as the normal failure mode is to have the diode turn into an open rather than a short. Of the 10 uf4007's and 8 shottky's only the two in the pre went.

I did have other issues, but I determined these to be unrelated to the treatment. One was a mains connection issue where the 14ga. solid core wire had twisted up an eye on the terminal strip that I found once it broke off. (14 ga. is stiff and I had twisted it too many times when flipping the plate over). The other issue is very embarrassing... My Dac didn't work after the treatment, but this was due to the power conditioner not being plugged in!!! (8+hrs wasted checking everything else).

Smoothplate does not recomend treating whole units as I have done, which I believe is a safe recomendation, even though I experienced very few true failures.

I cannot comment on the "improvements" brought by the treatment as the time in between negates any attempt at comparison. However I do have a pair of interconnects to compare to non-cryo'd ones once I have 100+ hours on them. I expect that I can't add much to what others have already commented on in this and other forums.
