After almost 50 years of building many electronic kits for ham radio, audio and various pieces of test equipment I occasionally encountered difficult parts of the build but eventually overcame the difficulty. But the S.E.X. amp has got me beat. Seems like a simple task but how do you install the tube sockets? I have spent much time trying to mount the things per the instructions and have failed to do so. The instructions say to mount the terminal strips with a 4-40 screw and secure with a nut – good so far. Then those same mounting screws are used to hold both the terminal strips and hold-down bracket and they must be tightened to pull the hold-down bracket snug against the socket/O-ring assem.; but when I turn the mounting screw, the nut holding the terminal strip tightens and I cannot turn the screw any further. Per instructions I have not used a lock washer for the terminal strip nut as it seems that the nut (terminal strip) must turn in order for the screw to tighten the nut in the hold-down bracket. I used brute force and broke one 4-40 screw and stripped the head out of another but I cannot turn the screw once the nut holding the terminal strip tightens. Also the hold-down bracket nut is held captive in the “U†shaped end of the bracket and cannot be tightened with a nut driver. I can drill two additional holes 90 degrees apart to mount the socket but that is not the way it was designed. So Bottleheads, what is the method to get the sockets installed? Where have I gone wrong?
