The Quad 303 was designed for the ESL 57, is as solid as a brick, is stable into just about any load and you should be able to get one for $200.Given the price and that you will likely be able to resell it in a year for a little more than you pay for it, I would buy one and use it a benchmark to assess other pieces against.
I would consider some of the Sugdens (eg A21a?, A28b)as possibilities.
The 303 is surprisingly good for its age and cost. I personally like the look of the companion Quad 33 preamp but it doesn't like 2V sources and is not sonically in the same league as the 303 so if you want to hear what the 303 can do, you will need a better preamp. IIRC, the 303 has a high gain so a passive preamp is a possibility.
FWIW, a friend who has had 57's for years has used a range of amps including the Quad IIs, 303's and 404's. He prefers the 303's though others may have different preferences.

David
