You are correct but the question was about mono switches not mono sources.
The mono switch on an amp or preamp averages the L&R inputs and sends this common signal on through the amplifier to both L&R outputs.
If you only have a signal coming in on one side, when you switch the the amp or preamp to mono, you get balanced sound from both L&R sides and hence an image mid way between the speakers.
