Its the amp. As others have suggested, you are hearing the results of greater current and damping factor. The 130 was Nikko’s entry level amp at the time, a stripped down version of the Alpha 230 (120W x 2). The Alpha 440 was two models above in the line and an all-around more potent design. Ditto for the top dog Alpha 650 (330W x 2, dual mono w/ separate power transformers). In the 1980's when I upgraded from an Alpha 230 to Alpha 450 then to Alpha 2000 (which replaced the Alpha 650), I experienced improvements very similar to what you describe. FWIW, the Alpha 440 is rated 220W @ 8 ohms, not 240.
