Re: Pioneer A-5 stereo amplifier?

I owned the 90 watt per channel A-7 around 1982-83. There is not much to know. Hookup of the A-5 is similar to any other amp. You have the ability to connect two pairs of speakers, system "A" and system "B". The minimum impedance the amp can drive is 4 ohms.

Hookup the + and - wires from the right speaker to the "R" speaker terminals and the + and - wires from the left speaker to the "L" terminals of either the "A" or "B" set of outputs.

If you are using only one pair of speakers (EITHER system "A" or "B") the impedance must be between 4 - 8 ohms.

If you are hooking up two pairs of speakers (BOTH system "A" and system "B") and intend to operate ONLY ONE system at a time, the impedance range can also be 4 - 8 ohms.

However, if you intend to operate BOTH systems "A" and "B" at the same time, the impedance range of the speakers must be 8 - 16 ohms.

If you were to operate two pairs of 4-ohm speakers with the amp at the same time for example, the total impedance presented to the amp would be 2 ohms, which is less than the minimum recommended load of 4 ohms.
