Re: Panasonic XR70

Are you sure? I have not yet seen an XR70 in a local store but I downloaded the manual off the net and it and although its not that clear, my impression is different from what you describe.

On Page 6, the biwiring diagram in the middle of the page identifies Front A as high frequency terminals and Front B as low frequency terminals. For biwiring, or biamping without an active crossover, there would be no need to identify hi and lo terminals. Having high frequency and low frequency terminals suggests that there is an active crossover in the biamp mode. You could easily confirm this by swapping the hi and lo connections. The active crossover would then block most of the the hi signals going to the hi side of the speakers and vice versa.

While it would be nice to eliminate the crossover in the speakers, this requires an active crossover exactly tailored to the specific speakers and is not practical for a mainstream amp intended to serve many different speakers for which crossover information may not even be available. With the speaker crossovers in place, you retain the sound characteristics of the original speakers but should still get a substantial benefit, particularly if both high and low frequencies are present in the music at high volumes.

My understanding is that when operating in stereo biamp mode, the SR70 feeds the B terminals through two unused surround amps and when switched from stereo bi-amping mode to multiichannel mode, it automatically switches the surround amps to the surround channels and switches the front speakers from biamping to biwiring with the front amps serving the B terminals in parallel with the A terminals. This is what I expect and what I think that the description on page 22 means though I don't find the description that easy to follow. Are you sure that it doesn't do this?

Regards

David
