Re: What differences do you hear when changing amplifiers?

I agree that other items in the system can cause such problems. I think that there is wide agreement on that.

With amps, some people believe that there is no difference between good amps that are not clipping and claim that blind testing proves them correct. I presume that they have also listened for differences and do not hear them themselves.

I believe I hear significant differences between amps and I cannot recall seeing a paper or an argument that would lead me to doubt what I hear.

My reason for posting was to try to get a better handle on the differences others perceive between amps. Are their perceptions pretty much identical to mine? Do different factors get their attention? Do we all rate the relative significance of different factors similarly or are their any patterns of preference?

I suspect that the lower the impedance and the more complex the load, the greater the differences between amps. Some speakers (like the Wilsons you listened to) may only sound good to guys like us when driven by a few very expensive amps that are specially designed to handle them.
