You will probably find that it helps to have a base model against which to assess alternatives.Based on what you have said, I would first look at the new Panasonic SA-XR70 that is just getting into the stores about now. My reasoning is as follows.
Panasonic's digital amp series has been getting rave reviews from a lot of people on the asylum including many who have used them to replace equipment costing many thousands.
There is reason to expect this model to be a significant further improvement.
It is a long way under your budget limit.
It is smaller and runs cooler than traditional amps. This means that fan noise is less likely to be an issue and that the size is smaller.
I like the look better than that of a huge box.
I have had consistently good experience with Panasonic products.
In my limited listening to one of the panasonic amps (an XR25) it easily beat another well regarded brand that was more than twice the price.You will need to listen and form your own judgements.
