Re: McIntosh C-22C vs C-2200

Catfish,

We use Chinese, Russian or NOS US tubes. These are supplied to us by a distribution company in England where they are initially checked, re-branded McIntosh and have the country of origin clearly stated on the bottle. Our main concern is reliability and side to side balance of these dual triodes. The tubes are heavily QC-ed and then run in the C2200 before final test.
We use over 1000 tubes per month in our tube units. The C2200 has a very low service rate which is comparable to any of our solid state pre amps.
If you remove the top cover of the C2200 you can of course roll any 12ax7, 5751, 12at7, or 6201 of your choice. We do not run the tubes out of the original design specs from GE. The conservative voltages applied should allow very long tube life in the C2200. It is not unusual to find a 1960's C22 which has its original tubes and meets specs.
