Re: McIntosh C-22C vs C-2200

Catfish,
The C22Cs all use the same switches, I was comparing the 22C to the original 1960s C22. The C22c will have some noise as the switches age and they may need a shot of cleaner in the future. We used Alps switches which are very high quality but they are still a switch and will wear.

A pre amp has two jobs to do. If a phono cartridge puts out 1/100 volt the pre amp will need to amplify this 100 to 200 times to power an amp to full output. If high level sources like Cd's, DVD-A, SACD, video, etc. are used, the pre amp will have to turn DOWN the signal. These sources will drive most amps to more than full volume. Today's pre amps just need to stay out of the way of the source components, hence the popularity of passive devices. The beauty of a pre amp like the C2200 is all bases are covered and the impedances are correct for the amp to have a flat frequency response.
The C2200 will not make any sounds when the sources are switched even if the volume control is all the way up. You could connect a Phase Linear 700 amp to the C2200 and turn the 2200 on and off and not hear a sound out of the 700 or even blow it up. Try that with any other brand of pre amp!
