Re: 220v amplifier in UK and Canada

You may have some other options.

1) Some amplifiers have transformers with tappings for both 110V and 220V so all you need to do is reconnect and replace any line side fuses with ones having twice the current rating.

2) Replacing the transformer in the amplifier may be less costly than buying an outboard transformer..

3) You may be able to simply wire the amplifier straight in at 220-240V 60Hz. Stoves, clothes driers and other heavy electrical loads in Canadian houses are wired at 220-240V. (the incoming service is two 110-120V lines 180 degrees out of phase with one another. Rather than connecting from 1 active to neutral, these appliances are connected across the two active lines) I have been thinking that this might be a better way to run amplifiers that can handle either voltage and would be interested in comments from anyone who has done this or knows of any problems with it.
