Re: AI MOD-3 tube eater question Amperex/Westinghouse

Your friend is correct. The 7308 is a more rugged tube than NOS 6922, they will last longer and IMO sound better.
To increase tube life:
if you do not use the phono stage, stick a couple of 7dj8/PCC88 in there. The 7dj8 is pin compatible with the standard 6922 tubes, however, it needs less current/higher voltage for the heaters. This mod will increase the heater voltage available for the 7308s by about .3 V.
A.I. runs the heater voltage too low in order to reduce tube rush and noise. This also reduces tube life, because the tube will become weak (below spec) sooner than on other preamps.
If you can stand a little bit more of tube hiss, your preamp will gain in punch and dynamics AND the 7308 will last longer.
Good luck
Carlos
