I have the A28B integrated which has the same power stage as the P28. To my ears, it sounds better than any comparably priced amp that I have heard. It can drive practically any speaker (sounded great on Quad ESL 57s) though more power (or a pair of amps) would be an advantage with very inefficient speakers. Sugden say it sounds almost the same as their very highly regarded model A21A.It is a high bias class A/B design and runs fairly warm.
To my ears, the amp sounds more like a high end tube amp than like most solid state amps. CDs are a lot easier on the ears when played through the Sugden. While you hear lots of detail, I would characterise it as more musical than analytical.
As my amp does not have pre out / main in connections, I have not had a chance to hear the line and power stages separately but I would expect the P28 to sound good with any decent pre amp.
A link to Sugden's web site is posted below. It does not have much on their old equipment right now but they say will eventually add that.
I hope that this helps
David
