Emile,The autoformer does not block the amp from reacting to the impedance of the load which is the speaker. The autoformer does allow a more precise matching of the speaker impedance to the amp where a 2, 4, or 8 ohm speaker will all look the same to the amp when the matching output tap is used. If you put a 4 ohm load on the 8 ohm tap the amp will increase power and run hotter like any direct coupled amp.
Passive bi-amping or bi-wiring works fine with Mc amps. We do it all the time.
If you change speakers you do not have to change your Mc amp. With the autoformer you get all of the power you pay for regardless of your speaker choice.Ron-C
