Hi
Impedance is not the major factor in total system loudness. To remove impedance from the equation, compare the old speaker's efficiency (decibels when driven by 2.83 Volts measured at 1 meter distance) with the Maggies.
For example, if your old speaker is 86 db/2.83V and the Maggie spec is 83 db/2.83 V, the system output will be 3 db lower, in spite of the lower impedance.
This whole issue gets mixed up because many manufacturers rate their speaker's efficiency with 1 W input. This can be misleading, because 1 W into 8 ohms is 2.83 V, 1 W into 4 ohms is 2 Volts.
Anyway, Maggies are famous for being power hungry speakers. Unless you currently have old Quads, Stax or Apogee speakers, expect less loudness and less apparent dynamic range. The upside is the Maggie's natural soundstaging and excellent midrange.
take it easy
