Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

Re: What beats a NOH?

I make TVC preamps with precision nickel core autoformers, wound with Cardas 6/9s wire. I try to use the best materials available anywhere in the world, no plain M6 cores or 3/9s magnet wire.
I will not mention the brand, hoping to comply with AA rules. Also, I do not have a USA distributor.

I have compared my TVC preamp to many tubed and solid state preamps. It beats them all, BAT, CAT, ARC, according to several audiophiles.
It beats hands down my Bruce Berman 76/6SN7 preamp with a 40 pound power supply; it beats easily a battery-run Amperex 7308 minimalist preamp with Magnequest plate chokes and Exotica TFT output caps.

Why? Because after five minutes of listening one notices the lack of transistor coloration or tube noise. Vocals sound heavenly and free from a slight timbral distortion that most (maybe all) active preamps add.

I am a firm believer in autoformer preamps vis-a-vis transformer preamps. Autoformers sound like a straight wire with attenuation, including the all-important lower bass, which helps one hear the size of the recording studio/concert hall.
OTOH transformers do have a low frequency saturation point, which is about 5 V for the S&B trafos, according to a paper and graph on S&B's site.
Since my Audio Aero CDP outputs 7 V, I am quite sure that up to 7V there is no saturation with an autoformer TVC. BTW my speakers go down to 20 Hz in-room, driven by the TVC and a Gamut D-200 amp.
I guess that if one uses a mini-monitor, my point is moot. However, if you are aiming for the best possible sound, IMO autoformers are the way to go.
David Slagle makes custom autoformers in the USA; Pieter Treuniert in Holland; I have tried both, they sound super IMO.
Good luck on your quest for better sound.
