I used to own the Yamaha RX 596, and recently upgraded to an Audio Refinement Complete.I haven't heard the S300, but based on what I've heard from the entry level NAD stuff like the C370, I would think the S300 is far, far superior to the Yamaha.
Speculating on if you upgraded, you will find a number of improvements:
- Frequency response is wider
- much larger soundstage in all directions
- more '3-D' dimensionality to voices and instruments, like they're more in-the-room sounding
- much less grain and more refinement in the high frequencies
- it may actually sound like there has been reverb added - this will be the affect of actually hearing the decay of dynamic sounds
- faster attack - all the beats will be sharper, more definedI could go on, but I think you'd be best to just find out for yourself.
I too was very skeptical about whether an amp could make a difference, and let me tell you, I was shocked and amazed after replacing the amp.
