Audio Note M3 phono kit is actually pretty good. Maybe the best deal on the market of reasonable phono units . A direct descendant of Kondo circuit . In stock form with premium parts $$$ is better than Audio Research PH7 in all aspects except the Bass which is not as deep nor well controlled.
Ear 834 upgraded is very, very good as well. Most people don't need a better pre than this one really even in cheap stock form ( I can't imagine it costs more in parts than $25 as bought from factory for $2k)
If it comes to solid state units I liked Benz Micro jewel but it was nowhere near as good as tube units.
The only Hagerman Cornet worth building is an octal unit and in this iteration is good indeed. The 9 pin version is just so so (and I'm being too generous because I really like Jim )
The likes like Nad PP or Project thingies are only the last resort solution or for people wanting to play dad's LP's on the cheap.
