I've owned a ARC Ref 3 and VAC Renaissance mk II preamps. I preferred the VAC in my system. The ARC was very transparent and fast, but could sound a bit lean and lightweight in the bass. The VAC was almost as transparent, but was still musical, never lean. No way would I say that VAC was rolled off or warm. I more thought that maybe the ARC had a slight emphasis on the upper frequencies. If spotlighting the high frequencies is what you are trying to do, then you may prefer the ARC.
