They sound better (in AN realm and sound aesthetics) because they do use black gates , cerafines and Tantalum resistors which standard models up to signature versions lack .In M3 line to get black gates and tantalums you neeed to spend $15K on M6. But mostly because they have supposedly much better output transformers i.e C-cores. While I would believe M2 (and Galahad derived )active tube regulators may sound better than passive chokes (faster less, resistive PSU supply) I do not necessary believe they are much more expensive to make. Like with Rega RB300 , the initial tooling and transition might have been expensive but PC board based supply is usually much cheaper than several chokes , transformers and big caps. That's why we don't see chokes in many products.Some people dislike active regulators (either tube or SS ) in power supplies. They can hear their sound signature. And the older M3 was pure dual PSU supply preamp while all of the successors up to M9 ) are not. Rgrds, W
