Home Amp/Preamp Asylum

Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

I agree with Charles.

Usually the biggest difference in a situation like this is a change in the speaker - room interaction. Try moving the speakers around, pull them away from walls and experiment with toe-in. Secondly, the whole chain in front comes under scrutiny. Besides his preamp be ing balanced and your preamp not being balanced, I bet there were other differences too. Did he have the same cd player as yours? The same turntable as yours? The same cables as you? The same power conditioning? Probably not.

The other thing to consider is that finding a truely balanced preamp for under $500 is darn near impossible. You may be able to find a 20 year old Classe that fits the bill, but that's about it. The reason being is that in a truely balanced preamp you are prictically doubling the internal cost. Instead of just controlling and amplifying left and right channels, now you are controlling and amplifying + and - of both the left and right channels. Lots more components needed and probably not a good idea to do on the cheap. For example, a $1000 single ended preamp would probably cost $1500 if it were truely balanced.

Play around with moving the speakers around before you proceed.
