indirect experience with Perseus Preamp

I recently upgraded my preamp from an NAD 114. My power amp is a Rogue Titan Atlas. My dealer recommended a Rogue Titan preamp, based on the sound that I like. So, the choices are: Metis, Perseus and 99. To the best of my recollection, Mark of Rogue Audio said the 99 is more rich; the Perseus is more hi-fi. I was able to audition the Metis and the 99 as well as a Conrad-Johnson ET3 and a PrimaLuna.

The 99 amplified by a Cronus sounded perfect. It's rare that an audition makes the choice as easy as this was. Auditioning components is a learned skill and often, at an audition, I can't tell this difference. However, this one was obvious. There was no need to audition the Perseus.

So, what about the Perseus? It has a balance control, which is a nice feature, but, at my request, Rogue added a balance control to the 99 I ordered. It's mandatory phono stage is solid state; the 99 has an optional tube phono stage. That doesn't matter to me because I have a good off-board phono preamp. But, if you want one with a phono stage, these two preamps produce different sounds.

Audition, audition, audition.

Magnum or not? That's a $400 difference and you can always upgrade it later.
