RE: My new favorite 12AX7 & 6922 for Aesthetix linestage

Hi Abe,

In the Calypso the 6922 has less of an effect on tone than the 12AX7 since the 6922 is a buffer and does no voltage amplification.

The dominant tube is the 12AX7, and the tonal difference between the CV4004 and the JJs (BTW why they still have Tesla on the label is a bit problematic for me - they are a LONG ways from the Tesla days) is what you are hearing. The soft top end on the Mullard has been replaced by a tube with more top end energy.

It has far less to do with the relative merit of cryogenic treatments than it does the differing tonal characteristics of the Mullard and the JJ. A tube with an extended top end (at least relative to what the listener is used to) is virtually always described the way you did - "more open, extended, and with better detail retrieval".

I'm glad the combo is working well for you!
