I just bought a B&K EX-442 power amplifier. I was running it for about 10 minutes into a pair of 4 ohm AR-3a speakers and I went over to adjust the volume. When I was near the amp, I felt intense heat radiating from it as though it were a space heater. I touched the back of the case and it was extremely hot. The heat sinks were even hotter. The amp was so hot, I wouldn't be surprised at all if I could fry an egg on it. This is the first solid state amp I've tried in many years, so I don't know if this is normal or not. The amp seems to work and play just fine. There is hum when I plug my phono stage directly into the power amp, but when I disconnect the phono stage and just connect the power amp to my speakers, it's quiet. So should I be worried about the intense operating temperature, or is this typical for this particular amplifier?

- Somebody probably adjusted the bias based on an ancient comment by Sam Tellig - David S. 09:56:07 07/5/11 (2)
