It has been so long since I owned the MC-101, I think I recall that you had to swap resistors to change the gain. The CP-45 was less thin, more transparent, with less grain than the MC-101. I would not recommend any model lower than the CP-45, but think the CP-50 would be the better choice. It is significantly more transparent and detailed than the CP-45, and offers 90% of the performance of the CP-60 at lower cost. I haven't heard the Brystons or Parasounds and can't comment on them.
