The open baffle midrange topology looks interesting and fairly simple with the right speaker.
Follow Ups:
though i haven't heard it personally.
Excellent driver. Good for open baffle, too! Tiny 'lil xmax tho, .5mm
AND the efficiency is more like 95 than their specc'd 99-100, for the ranges we would generally use it in (read- <3.5k). VERY good driver though. I have one I prefer, the PR65neo, asian built paper cone, true 97dB across its range, 1mm xmax, neodymium/strontium hybrid magnet, awesome sound (very dynamic). Beware a serious peak at 4500 or so (it almost prevented me from trying this driver!), but apart from that (and limited xmax) it's quite incredible.

The Supravox classic series drivers look like they would be pretty good in this role - wide bandwidth, sensitive, high Xmax. The 285 is a little bigger than you are suggested, but would be a pretty robust choice.

You could also try dewhizzering a cheap fullranger, and use it just for the mids...
One of my drivers started life as a Wharfedale super 10 (fullranger). I've dewhizzered it, and use paralleled 15ohms / .86mH to flatten it (chopping few dB off the upper mids), and it's quite nice as an OB mid (supplemented with 15's and a piezo tweet). The 285 in the same role would have a similar bandwidth, lots more headroom, and probably wouldn't need the filter to flatten the response - which is why it's the option I'd go for if I wanted to really optimise this configuration.
would they gargle when playing fave rap?
I haven't noticed it when playing loud. That could be cos I define "loud" differently to you, or cos the Wharfedales have a small linear X-max, so I can never turn them up enough to get gargle happening.
if xmax is limited - can be good thing vs overshootat say 4ft like to see 120+dB peaks on some uncompressed deep drum beats - not all that loud back in room
Have you read the review on 6moons regarding the avantgarde trio + basshorn system?
Wonder how well their ~40hz horn would go,EQd flat another octave, along with feedback sensing?
Looks like abit of a recipe for disaster, but seems to work for a few people. The avantgarde stuff is certainly stylish. Wonder how impulse response is if nothing else? JMMLC had a nice paper on crossover/cooledit spectral time alignment.
Off to get an ECG tomorow, and look for some work for this year - living on $150 doesnt allow for audio projects, but a nice $390 from minimum wage, with no real expenses living at home will lift my spirits!
meanwhile on the ultimateavmag.com,the 'way down deep articles seem to conclude with GENELEC 4 x 12" system or the velodyne $5k 18" :-)
